Kendrey Maduro, Zane Barnhart earn MLB Draft League weekly honors

NEW YORK -- The MLB Draft League announced that Frederick’s Kendrey Maduro and Mahoning Valley’s Zane Barnhart were named Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the period of June 12 to June 18.

Maduro, 19, takes home Hitter of the Week honors for the third week of the MLB Draft League season after batting .611 (11-for-18) with two home runs, three doubles, one triple and eight RBI in five games for the Keys. The infielder paced the league in hitting, on-base percentage (.731), slugging (1.222), OPS (1.953), hits, RBI, runs scored (10) and total bases (22) and finished tied for second in home runs and walks (6). 

Maduro hit safely in all five contests and had four multi-hit efforts for the Keys, including a pair of three-hit games. The infielder went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI against Mahoning Valley on Monday and reached base four times the following day, going 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base. Maduro tripled and doubled as part of a 3-for-4, two-RBI performance in the series' final game, then concluded his week by homering in back-to-back games against State College. He went 4-for-7 with three extra-base hits, five runs scored and four RBI in Frederick’s weekend series versus the Spikes. 

Maduro is batting .500/.604/.895 with two home runs, five doubles, two triples and 11 RBI through 12 games with Frederick. The Pos Chiquito, Aruba native leads all qualified MLB Draft League hitters in average, OBP, slugging, OPS (1.499), hits (19), runs scored (15) and total bases (34). As a Northwest Florida State College freshman this past spring, Maduro compiled a .261/.377/.538 batting line with 14 home runs and 44 RBI in 52 games. 

Barnhart, 21, garnered Pitcher of the Week honors after going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 11 strikeouts in two relief appearances for the Scrappers. He allowed two hits and one walk in 5.2 innings. The right-hander struck out five batters over 2.2 innings against Frederick on June 14. Facing Williamsport on June 17, Barnhart earned his first win of the season after he recorded six strikeouts over three innings. Barnhart struck out 50 percent (11 of 22) of the batters he faced last week.

Barnhart is tied for the MLB Draft League lead with a 0.00 ERA through five appearances for Mahoning Valley. The Medino, Ohio native has held opposing hitters to a .063 average (2-for-32) while registering 17 strikeouts against 16 walks in 9 2/3 innings. He has completed multiple innings in his past three appearances, striking out 15 batters over his 7 2/3 innings. Barnhart, who recently announced his commitment to West Virginia University, was 5-1 with six saves and a 2.06 ERA in 20 appearances as a junior this past spring for Hillsboro College. He posted 61 strikeouts against 23 hits and 10 walks in 43 2/3 innings. Barnhart had 13 saves over 44 appearances in three seasons with Hillsboro, compiling a 3.28 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 74 innings.
